WEEK 7 WRAP-UP!

Week 7 is a wrap and the camp was buzzing with family activities.  Weather was absolutely beautiful this week.

There is a large family group, friends, and relatives that come up this week every year as well as a lot of our long timers.  Fishing starts early before 6am usually and most of the camp is back in by around 11am to clean fish and have a fish fry.  Then if the weather is right lots of bag tournaments are run with this year being no exception and then fishing in the evening.

Walleye bite on humps is starting to take shape as we push into the summer season.  Leeches, crawlers, and minnows are still being eaten with regularity.  28-inches was the largest walleye caught this week unless someone didn’t mention a bigger one to me.  Dock fishing has been extremely good with great sizes and numbers being caught in the evening after dinner.

We had one notable story/fish tale. Dan from Cabin 6 who has been coming to RSL over 25 years was on potluck (as many of you know where that is) and he got a snag. PeeWee or Diesel asked for a net assist. Dan put the pole down to help net their fish when they decided it wasn't necessary Dan reached down and grabbed his pole to release the lure from Canada/or whatever it got stuck on. He was pulling the pole straight back frustrated he couldn't get it dislodged as many anglers do to just try and break the line. He started another technique to break the line when the line started moving in the water. Diesel did witness this and the fight was on. Dan fought the fish for a small while before somehow the lure popped out of the fishes mouth. Dan said it was the biggest whatever type of fish he has ever had on his line, and for all he knows it could have been any type of large fish as he has caught many trophy fish. At the end of the day he said it was definitely a fish of a lifetime and he thought it was a snag originally. Lucky he didn't lose his pole.

We had some musky hunters casting this week for the fish of 10000 casts and we caught a couple and had some very large skis take swipes at bait near the boat.  Not too many pictures from the musky hunters this week as I rarely get photos from them however we have a few nice pike pics. Cabin 7 TJ is bound and determined to land the over 50 next year as she saw it twice in two consecutive days.  I’m not sure where it was located for our other musky anglers this year but we’ve had big musky surfacing in a lot of spots throughout the lake.  Just ask when you get up here and I’ll give you an idea where they were caught, or seen.  That is if I know.

MFT results for June 29: Beautiful day for a tournament.  Blue bell skies and frankly a little warm for my liking.  Anyway, we had a cabin sweep the awards.  Congrats to Mark (Peewee) from Cabin 6 for winning both the walleye and pike/musky prizes.  His Walleye measured 26 1/4-inches, and his Pike measured 23 7/8-inches.  While Dan from the same cabin caught a 5 7/8-inch Bass to claim the Micro Prize.  Congrats to everyone for an absolutely beautiful day up here!

Normally we don’t recognize someone retiring but Terry in P2 had a shirt on so I’m going to let her know congratulations on your retirement Terry!

All in all it was a great week with great people.  It took me a long time to figure out RSL isn’t only about fishing (Thanks brother-in-law Chris)!  This week exemplifies that.  In case anyone does not know we have several outdoor games including bags/cornhole.

We are not using butcher paper unless specifically requested as the MNR does not like it when they do fish checks.  If you have a food saver we recommend bringing it as it will preserve your fish longer, or you can bring zip lock bags as well.  We have plastic bags but they don’t have a seal to lock in the freshness just an fyi.

Remember to send photos!
